Aunque pasé 4 meses en Sudamérica, sin duda, la experiencia más intensa y significativa fue mi SYLE. En cuanto llegué a Uruguay, mi madre anfitriona Gabriela Etchebehere y sus familia me hicieron sentir completamente en casa. En el resto de mi estadía en uruguay, continuamente me sorprendía la amabilidad y generosidad de mis anfitriones.
Durante mi SYLE tuve oportunidad de conocer muchos uruguayos diferentes. Como resultado, tuve una visión de la sociedad uruguaya muy dinámica y con diferentes matices, en lugar de una visión más simple que habría tenido si solo hubiera interactuado con pocas personas. Aunque Montevideo es una ciudad grande - demasiado grande para explorarla totalmente en dos meses (me quedé un segundo mes después que terminó el SYLE) - fue lo suficientemente pequeña como para que me sintiera en casa. Aún hoy siento una conección personal con la ciudad y espero volver algún día.
El SYLE en sí mismo y la gente increíble que lo organizó son para mi un ejemplo de compartir sin egoismo y del espíritu voluntario. Inspirado por ese ejemplo, espero alojar estudiantes en el futuro. Siempre recordaré a mis generosos anfitriones Servas y todos los miembros Servas que se ofrecieron para introducirme en su país y su cultura.
SYLE in perspective after some years by Christopher Frederick
Although I spent 4 months living in South America, without a doubt the most intense and meaningful experience during that time was my SYLE. As soon as I arrived in Uruguay, my host mother Gabriela Etchebehere and her family made me feel completely at home. For the rest of my stay in Uruguay, I was continually amazed by the kindness and generosity of my hosts.
During my SYLE, I had the opportunity to meet many different Uruguayans. As a result, I gained a dynamic and nuanced view of Uruguayan society, instead of the simpler view I might have gained by only interacting with a few people. Although Montevideo was a big city--too big to explore fully in two months (I stayed in Uruguay for a second month after the SYLE ended)--it was also small enough that I felt at home. Even today, I still feel a real personal connection to the city of Montevideo, and hope to return one day.
The SYLE itself and the incredible people who organized it, are for me a powerful example of selfless sharing and the spirit of volunteerism. Inspired by their example, I hope to host exchange students myself when I am older. I will always remember my generous Servas hosts, and all the Servas members who volunteered to introduce me to their country and culture.
